The partial foot amputee has very few good options for their problem. While Genesis Prosthetic Arts can fit those more conventional devices, over 30 years of experience allow us to also fit non-"standard of care" items such as the silicone partial foot prosthesis, combining the multiple disciplines and skills needed to properly fit and fabricate this device from start to finish. The loss of any part of the foot — whether from a transmetatarsal, Lisfranc, Chopart, or Syme amputation — can cause a multitude of problems. The foot works like a tripod, with the heel acting as one leg, the big toe as the second, and the other four toes making up the third leg. One can see why just the loss of a big toe can create serious problems for an individual. The prosthesis that a patient is fit with can make a BIG difference in his or her ability to walk, and how much energy it takes. A "toe filler" is inadequate to address the needs of the partial foot amputee.

Getting More of Patients' Lives Back
While patient outcomes vary, Genesis has gotten patients back on the ski slopes, playing racquetball, horseback riding, back to full shifts in the operating room, hanging drywall, and many other things. Some folks just want to take a walk on the beach with their spouse, or take their kids to Disney World for the day and enjoy the rides and some ice cream instead of needing to call it quits after just an hour there. Toe "spacers" can also be of benefit, as seen below. This patient was only able to walk up to an hour a day with discomfort with "toe fillers." Now this patient can walk all day without discomfort, and the appearance speaks for itself.
Don't underestimate the importance of prosthetic rehabilitation for "just a couple of toes." It serves a valuable function, as you learned above. This patient was born with partially formed toes and had 17 surgeries with no relief from walking pain. Too often this type of foot problem is considered "small" or minor. But ask my patients if they agree, especially after they have received good prosthetic care. I was able to get this patient from taking pain relievers to manage pain to get through a work day — these simple devices (not so simple for me to design and create, truth be told) helped the patient work full days without discomfort or need for medication.
